Hereward Tower - Peterborough

Pelican Partners (Peterborough) LLP

Refurbishment and alteration work of the old HMRC office in Peterborough, including the construction of an additional storey on top of the existing roof in order to create 33 flats over 7 floors, service yard and car parking.

The 7 storey building comprises of 5 flats on 6 floors and 3 penthouses on the seventh floor. Beneath the building there are retail units and throughout the project we have shared the access with their delivery vehicle access.

The project involved stripping the external facade which was accessed via the use of suspended hoists over the operating retail service yard. Whilst utilising the existing structure, the building envelope was re clad and new windows and Juliette balconies installed. Following investigative works, an additional floor was constructed in a light weight metal frame and clad incorporating aluminium windows and Juliette balconies.

A precast concrete staircase between floors 2 and 8 was removed in sections to increase the floor area and provide additional space, the existing staircase was then upgraded to suit building regulations. The existing lift shaft was also adapted to provide space for a new firefighting lift, all of which helped provide more residential area and therefore increase value and reduce costs to the project. The duration of the contract was 57 weeks; however it was completed in 50.

Lindum won an International Safety Award from the British Safety Council in recognition of the commitment shown to safe working practices during this project.
