Lindum completes 10-year regeneration of Grimsby street

21st March 2018

Lindum is proud to have completed the final phase of a £7 million social housing project which has transformed a previously rundown community in the heart of Grimsby.

One hundred old terraced houses were demolished to make way for 70 new homes at the southern end of Guildford Street – which has been renamed Orchard Drive.

The final 19 homes have now been handed over, marking the complete regeneration of one of North East Lincolnshire’s most challenging brownfield sites.

The project was delivered thanks to joint investment from Longhurst and Havelok Homes – part of Longhurst Group – North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) and Homes England (formerly the Homes and Communities Agency).

All the new two and three-bedroom homes were build built by Lindum, using mainly local labour.

Technical Director Andy Barradell said Lindum was delighted to be part of the scheme and that the final result was fantastic.

“It was great to work with Longhurst on this project and it is really satisfying to see the conclusion of the regeneration,” he said.

“As a construction company, we specialise in working with clients to deliver much-needed homes such as this. It demonstrates how good quality, affordable housing can benefit a local community.

“This project was particularly complex from a flood risk point of view, requiring the plots to be raised by approximately one metre above ground level whilst the road was maintained at the existing level. This required extensive use of ramps, steps and raised walkways.

“We also had to work around numerous existing services, such as drainage, gas, water and telecoms providers.”

Ian Jackson, Executive Director of Portfolio Investment at Longhurst Group, said: “We’re delighted to have taken handover of the final phase of properties, marking the completion of the total regeneration of this development within the East Marsh vicinity.

“We’ve been committed to this area for a very long time now, so to have now completely replaced the old properties that stood here with brand new, affordable and sustainable family homes is fantastic.

“This is a high-quality development that will really make a difference to the area and improve the lives of the families living here, as well as the wider community.

“Orchard Drive is a shining example of our strong and ongoing partnership with North East Lincolnshire Council and we thank both them and Homes England for their support.”

Councillor Peter Wheatley, portfolio holder for housing, added: “It’s wonderful to see the results of this great project between the Council, Longhurst & Havelok, and Homes England.

“This project has created a significant number of affordable and sustainable houses for future generations in our area.

“One of the Council’s priorities is to ensure that local people have access to good quality and affordable accommodation. These new houses have replaced some properties that were in a rather poor state with some family friendly dwellings which will foster some vibrant communities.

“I would like to thank Longhurst & Havelok for their great work on this project.”

Investment in the East Marsh Neighbourhood Renewal Area program has also brought about renovation of 49 dwellings in Guildford Street (north) as part of the creation of a Home Zone, and a facelift for 66 properties on neighbouring Victor Street.
