Ferry Meadows Watersports Centre

Nene Park Trust

This prestigious project was opened by HRH The Princess Royal and comprised the partial demolition of an existing building and construction of the Ferry Meadows Watersports Centre at Nene Park.

This is the largest improvement project ever undertaken by Nene Park Trust and their goal was for visitors to see a real transformation on completion of the building. Their aim was to provide visitors with a waterside café and watersports activity centre which is amongst the best in the country.

The new construction comprises a steel frame, beam and block floor suspended approximately 1m above ground floor level to prevent flooding. The centre has timber in-fill panels to the steel frame and is clad with larch and Trespa. The roofing material is zinc with aluminium fascias and soffits. The roof also incorporates some very large architectural overhangs.

The external works comprise a circulation road and staff parking including access to the new slipways into the lake. There is also a cycle way and extensive steps, ramps and decking areas around the building including a pier leading to the edge of the water. The building has stone filled gabion baskets to the perimeter of the walkway facing the lake, which are also used as a retaining wall near the edge of the water.

The centre offers a café, hire shop, training area, ice cream kiosk, changing facilities, and a cycle hire shop and has been very well received by users, new and existing.
