Project Overview

Share Article:

Lindum has developed a long standing working relationship with Peterborough Regional College having completed eight different projects over the last five years on the campus at Park Crescent, Peterborough.

Works has involved window replacements, classroom, library and main entrance refurbishments, alteration and refurbishment of the construction workshop and the design and build of a food excellence centre.

All the work has enabled Peterborough Regional College to attract a wide range of students, giving them the chance to learn and develop within high quality facilities.
The majority of the work has taken place out of term time, however we have completed work within a live college environment. For each project we produced a bespoke traffic management plan that clearly defined our movements alongside the movements of the staff and pupils at the college. This plan was produced together with the estate’s team to ensure that our work
wouldn’t interfere with the daily routine of the college.

Temporaryn access routes were clearly signposted and crowd barriers, heras fencing and hoarding was used to segregate our work from the rest of the site. Mobile Elevated Working Platforms (MEWP’s) were used to avoid the need for a full scaffold around buildings when the window replacement work was being carried out.

This method saved the college both time and money. A spider lift was used for the courtyard area when replacing windows, this machine was able
to traverse through the college’s tight openings and corridors to access enclosed areas.
Working within an old structure, we overcame many challenges with the existing building such as coordinating asbestos removal and refurbing  structural items within the existing frame.

Lindum worked closely with the estates team during each project to keep the students and the school up to date with the work progress on a week by week basis.

Our Social Value Commitment

Whilst working with the college we wanted to leave a lasting legacy and help in whatever way we could.
Whilst working at Peterborough Regional College we have attended its annual careers fair as well as attending a further 12 careers events within
Peterborough. We regularly attend these events to explain and encourage to students the wide range of careers available within the industry and the career paths we offer, such as graduate placements and apprenticeships.
We have welcomed work experience students from the college to learn and develop their understanding in the types of roles and responsibilities there are on a construction site. Seeing this first hand at their own college enables them to work within an environment they are comfortable with.
We always look to employ local subcontractors when working on projects at the college, meaning many of those who carry out the work have previously
been educated at Peterborough Regional College. All materials are procured from builder’s merchants within Peterborough, ensuring that the money spent by the college is reinvested into the local economy.
During the refurbishment work on the Construction Workshop, our site management team presented to the construction students, explaining about the industry and the opportunities available. Our team then set
the students a task of planning and budgeting for an imaginary project. After been allocated a term to carry out the task the students presented to our site management team. A prize was given to the winning team (students who presented well and had the best idea).

Upon completion of the refurbishment work we donated a small amount of materials (bricks and timber) to allow the students to develop their practical
skills.
