Young people will learn about how the construction industry is becoming more sustainable during three days of activities at the Lincolnshire Showground next week.

Around 1,600 school children are expected to attend this year’s Lincolnshire Construction Week, which takes place between Tuesday, September 27 and Thursday, September 29.

Lincoln Group Training Association (LGTA) teamed up with Abbey Access and a wealth of local and regional employers from the construction industry to host the event.

It will offer school pupils the opportunity to explore a variety of technical, professional and trade career opportunities available within the construction industry.

Lindum Group has two stalls at the event, with activities involving mini diggers and a recycling skip. Children will have a go at using the mini diggers to pick up and move tyres, supplied by Lindum’s Plant division, and hook them onto a traffic cone. Two of the diggers will be conventional diesel, with one electric powered, continuing the sustainability theme.

Lindum Group Apprentice Manager, John Levey said: “This event is an excellent opportunity to give kids a hands-on experience of what skills are required for working in the construction industry.

“We will be there to give the kids a flavour of what a career in construction would look like, but also inspire them to realistically consider it as a future career path. It is a great way for them to try out different activities in construction over the three-day event, and also have the chance to question the activity instructors about their careers, and how they got into construction.”

The skip will contain various recyclable materials that you would normally find in your average construction site skip. The students will be encouraged to go through the contents and pick out what can be recycled, reused, and what they can be turned into.

Students will also have the opportunity to have a go at a surveying task, trying to get wooden stakes level in the ground, using a laser level.

Construction & STEM Ambassadors along with industry apprentices and full-time college students will be on hand to support each of the school groups throughout the day, providing invaluable insights into their own career pathways and aspirations.

Steve Taylor, Group Training Officer for Lincoln Group Training Association, said: “Nearly 1,600 school pupils from across the Lincolnshire region will try their hands at a range of construction skills during the three day ‘have-a-go’ event at the Lincolnshire Showground. This interactive approach is designed to inspire young people to take up a career within the construction industry.

“Pupils from year six primary school age upwards will take part in activities such as planning, eco building design and techniques, ground engineering, carbon net-zero challenges, 3D clay sculpting, earth structures, mini diggers, scaffolding, drywall room structures and industrial waste recycling.

“Plus, the more traditional trade skills of plumbing, tiling, electrical, carpentry/joinery, plastering and brickwork. To compliment these skills experiences, interactive sessions on STEM related challenges, simulators and virtual reality goggles will also be on offer.”
