A 24/7 publicly accessible defibrillator has been installed in a village after a Lindum site manager’s fundraising triathlon.
Justin Moore, 51, who managed our Accent Homemade affordable housing site, in Bottisham, Cambridgeshire, completed a cold-water swim, a cycle ride and run in just over three-and-a-half hours in September.
The life-saving defibrillator is now located on the side of Bottisham Pharmacy, in High Street.
Opening the defibrillator’s secure box is by calling 999 for an access code.
The portable device is usable by individuals regardless of their level of training or expertise, and it provides voice prompts for the user.
Married dad-of-three Justin, who lives in March, said: “This is not about me, it’s about Lindum making a positive contribution to a community where we have worked.
“The defibrillator is a real asset for the village, which has the potential to save lives.”
Justin raised a total of £1,500 by completing the triathlon, of which £900 funded the defibrillator.
Bottisham Parish Council said it was grateful for Justin’s efforts and to the pharmacy for allowing the council to locate the defibrillator on the side of its building.
The clerk to the council is responsible for ensuring maintenance of the device.
According to St John Ambulance, the early use of a defibrillator to treat someone in cardiac arrest before an ambulance arrives can significantly increase their chances of survival.
The remaining £600 (plus Gift Aid) of Justin’s fundraising has gone to Red2Green, a charity supporting people aged 16+ with learning disabilities and autism towards achieving independence, education and employment, with sites in rural Cambridgeshire, including a community garden in Bottisham.
