Lindum Group helped deliver lessons in science and construction to primary school children as part of work to build new council housing in Lincoln city centre.

Pupils at Bishop King and St Peter at Gowts primary schools enjoyed several unique learning experiences, including a visit to see ongoing building work at the Barbican in the city and trips to Construction Week at the Lincolnshire Showground.

The lessons were part of Lindum’s ongoing commitment to engage with the communities where it operates and took place as Lindum built 11 new homes in Hermit Street on behalf of City of Lincoln Council.

Most recently, pupils from Bishop King Primary School in Kingsway, Lincoln, hosted Science Enquiry Nature Lab days with Lincolnshire Outdoor Learning (LOL), a local social enterprise.

The full-day sessions invited Year 6 students to immerse themselves in outdoor learning, exploring the biodiversity within their school grounds.

From team-building exercises to detailed bug investigations and insect drawing, the hands-on sessions were designed to foster sustainable thinking through circular economy principles such as “Sow, Study, Sustain,” in alignment with the school’s curriculum.

Lindum covered the costs of the sessions. LOL, a not-for-profit organization, funds its Lincolnshire Wolds Micro Farm in Louth through programs like these. The farm was established during the pandemic to provide organic produce to local food banks, supporting vulnerable residents.

Founder Ashley Butterfield said: “Lincolnshire Outdoor Learning is grateful to Lindum for supporting our Sow Study Sustain Science days.

“Local business partnerships are vital for helping children experience the great Lincolnshire outdoors and put the LOL back into school lives!’”

Bishop King School teacher Kathryn Malone said it had been a fantastic learning experience.

“They were learning whilst furthering their collaborative learning and enquiry-based skills.

“All learning styles and needs were facilitated and catered for, and the pitch of each activity was perfect for the abilities of our year 6 children.”

In addition, Lindum welcomed 31 Year 4 students from St Peter at Gowts Primary School to tour its Barbican construction project in St Mary’s Street.

The students prepared by reviewing project drawings, fostering curiosity and sparking questions during their site visit. They also engaged with Lindum employees, who shared insights into their career paths.

In September, Lindum sponsored transportation for Bishop King and St Peter at Gowts students to attend Lincolnshire Construction Week, an annual event Lindum established in 2003 to inspire interest in the construction industry.

Over 90 Year 6 students from both schools engaged in technical and practical challenges, including operating mini diggers, racing in PPE, and building a giant Jenga tower.

For many students, this was their first experience at the event, and Lindum was pleased to cover the transportation costs.

Lindum Group’s Social Value Manager, Hayley Cowell, said: “We’re thrilled to support local students with hands-on learning experiences that make science and construction come alive.

“By inviting pupils to explore real-world building projects and participate in engaging outdoor activities, we’re hoping to inspire a sense of curiosity and wonder about the world around them.

“Engaging with schools in this way is an important part of our commitment to building strong, supportive relationships in the communities where we work. It’s wonderful to see the students’ enthusiasm and to help provide them with memorable learning opportunities.”
