Students at York St John University are benefiting from a newly refurbished student support services area following the completion of improvement works by Lindum Group.

The new Student Hub project has reimagined the foyer of the Holgate building on the York campus into a welcoming, accessible, and flexible space where students can access a wide range of support services in one place.

The redesign brings together frontline and second-line support, confidential meeting areas, and self-service options, creating a calm and inclusive environment that responds to the diverse needs of the York St John student community.

Key features of the refurbishment include a new-look welcome desk, reclad in reclaimed pallet wood with a birch-faced plywood top and a new ‘Welcome’ sign.

Bespoke planters with integrated seating and desks have been installed, combining natural greenery with practical spaces for study and conversation. Seating has been finished with cushioned, upholstered backs and bases for extra comfort.

The updated foyer also includes dedicated planters designed to house planting boxes and a central water feature, adding to the tranquil atmosphere.

Throughout construction, Lindum worked carefully to minimise disruption to staff and students. The team used PVC hoardings to separate works areas and employed measures to reduce noise and dust.

Sensitive phases of the project were carefully scheduled around key times to ensure the building remained operational throughout the summer period.

Lindum York MD James Nellist said: “We’re delighted to have delivered a space that will make a real difference to students’ university experience. This new hub is welcoming, flexible, and inclusive, and it reflects the University’s commitment to student wellbeing and success.

“Our focus on the reuse and recycling of waste materials is embedded within our culture. We created Lindum waste in 2004 for this very reason, to ensure we could manage and ultimately reduce waste to landfill, reusing materials on other projects as we have seen here.”

Penni Robson, Academic Registrar at York St John University, said: “The transformation in the Holgate building is exceptional. Lindum and the University’s Estates team have created a stylish, inclusive and welcoming space for our students at the centre of campus.

“The reaction to our new Student Hub space has been overwhelmingly positive and we are excited to share it with our new and returning students.”

The Holgate building Support Hub is now open and will act as a central point for students across the York campus, reducing wait times, improving service delivery, and providing a clear pathway to the support they need.
