Construction professionals from Lindum shared insights into their career journeys as part of a mentoring scheme with a local secondary school pupil.

Over the past nine months, the team worked with A-level student Thomas Wilkinson from the Priory City of Lincoln Academy in Skellingthorpe Road.

Throughout the programme, Thomas engaged with professionals across various roles, gaining insights into the industry and valuable career advice.

The initiative, a pilot scheme designed by the Community Legacy Partnership for SCAPE’s Regional Construction Framework, reflects Lindum’s ongoing commitment to Social Value by promoting careers in construction and inspiring the next generation of industry professionals.

His experience included one-on-one sessions with Site Engineer Tom Haire, Plant & Civils Director Tom Robertson, and Apprentice Manager John Levey, who provided guidance on securing an apprenticeship. A standout moment was a site visit to Lindum’s Western Growth Corridor project, where Thomas observed the complexities of managing a major development site.

This month, he honed his presentation skills in a training session and showcased his progress by presenting to the SCAPE Community Legacy Partnership Board.

Thomas said: “The mentoring programme consisted of six sessions which were very flexible to what I wanted.

“The sessions have taught me the workings of a construction and engineering company and other things such as how to be attractive to an apprentice employer or how to give an interesting presentation to keep people focussed.

“The main parts I have taken from this programme is something attractive to put on my CV and gaining a lot of confidence in talking to people.”

City of Lincoln Priory Academy is part of the Priory Federation of Academies Trust, which has been a repeat client of Lindum Group for 20 years.

Lindum mentor Emma Wardell praised Thomas’s enthusiasm and commitment, stating: “Tom has shown a great attitude and is clearly making the most of opportunities to develop himself. As he came with an interest in engineering and construction, we showcased the diverse range of roles at Lindum Group. It’s been brilliant to see Tom develop his ideas and broaden his understanding of the industry.”

The SCAPE Mentoring programme exemplifies Lindum’s dedication to nurturing fresh talent and supporting young people in exploring the dynamic world of construction.
