Lindum’s rebuild of Ashfield District Council’s Northern Depot has taken a significant step with the erection of the steel framework.
A new depot building, on Station Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, will serve as the hub for frontline services including waste collection, street cleaning, grounds maintenance and fleet management.
Once completed, the existing ‘Neighbourhoods’ building is to be demolished to make way for a new car park and secure vehicle area.
Further improvements include the refurbishment of an existing administration building and installation of a 3m high acoustic fence near the railway to reduce noise for nearby homes.
Councillor Helen-Ann Smith, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Parks and Environmental Services, said: “The erection of the steel framework is a sure sign of the progress we’re making.
“This investment is first and foremost about our residents, delivering cleaner streets, reliable collections and well‑maintained green spaces for years to come.
“We are not just building a new depot; we are creating a modern facility that will stand the test of time, support our frontline teams and ensure the very best services for our community.”

Lindum Contracts Manager Darrel Patten said: “We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with Ashfield District Council, and to be working with project management company Kinver Business Solutions, in delivering the works.
“We’re making excellent progress in bringing the modern vision for the Northern Depot to life.
“The installation of the steel frame for the new depot building marks a significant milestone in our delivery of this project.
“We have meticulously planned the construction phases to ensure zero interruption to essential council services.
“The new depot will be a significant upgrade, not just for the council teams, but for the whole community.”

The depot will also host Vision West Nottinghamshire College, training opportunities in vehicle maintenance and civil engineering.
This partnership will create a hands-on learning environment for apprentices and students, integrating education with live council operations to benefit both the workforce and the wider community.
Lindum was appointed as main contractor to deliver the modernisation works following a compliant competitive tender process via the PAGABO procurement framework.
Kinver Business Solutions is managing the project on behalf of the council. The works are on track for completion in Summer 2026 and Lindum’s team is engaging with the council, Vision West Notts College, Thorn Baker Recruitment and local community stakeholders to coordinate and deliver social value benefits worth at least £1.5m throughout the contract.
Initiatives include supporting local employment and apprentices (95% of subcontractor labour is based within 25 miles of the site), CV and interview skills workshop for young jobseekers, 20 hours of community volunteering by Lindum staff and food bank donations.
Lindum is also making in-kind donations, including defibrillator provision and support for converting an area of grassland at the depot into a training area for Vision West Notts College.
