Peterborough City Council’s Waste Transfer Station was originally designed as a temporary structure. However, with around 20 waste lorries using the facility daily, the site was struggling to cope with demand.

Waste was stored outdoors under a simple canopy, which led to several operational and environmental challenges.

Loose debris attracted seagulls, causing hygiene and safety concerns and rainwater increased the weight of stored waste, driving up recycling costs due to weight-based charges.

The site also experienced multiple fire incidents, posing risks to workers and the surrounding environment.

To address these issues, Peterborough City Council partnered with Lindum to design and construct a permanent facility that would enhance operational efficiency and safety while remaining within budget. Through three years of planning and value engineering, Lindum delivered a purpose-built indoor facility that significantly improved waste handling processes.

Key features  include:

  • A fully enclosed facility – Waste lorries can now reverse inside to unload, preventing exposure to the elements and reducing contamination.
  • Improved safety measures – Bollards have been installed to protect the building from accidental vehicle damage.
  • Fire risk mitigation – A sprinkler system enhances fire safety and minimizes the risk of incidents.
  • Optimised traffic flow – A new one-way road system streamlines vehicle movement, reducing congestion and improving efficiency.

The new Waste Transfer Station provides a safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible solution for Peterborough City Council. The upgraded facility helps control costs, improve waste management, and enhance overall site safety.
