Hard-working construction teams were treated to tea and cakes as a thank you for kitting out a community café at an adult day care centre.

Employees from Lindum Group and electrical contractor Brook&Mayo donated labour, materials, and expertise to bring a kitchen and café area to life at the Boundary Street Hub in Lincoln.

The café, run by Boundary Street Hub’s service users, is designed to encourage independence and skill development by providing hands-on experience. Construction workers helped with the project after completing building work elsewhere at the site, which was formerly known as Ancaster Day Centre.

In May last year, Lindum worked for Lincolnshire County Council to make improvements to The Boundary Hub as part of a wider scheme of day care service improvements across the county. Work included completely remodelling the reception area and modernising the toilets and hygiene suite.

After the project, Lindum was approached by day centre staff to see if there was anything they could do to assist with the kitchen project. This month the team involved was invited back for the privilege of being the café’s very first customers.

Lindum contract manager Paul Jenkinson: “We were happy to help and said we, along with our electrical contractor, could offer a few days free labour to get the kitchen finished.

“We’re really pleased to have contributed to such a meaningful project. The centre provides valuable services for the local community, and we hope the café will be a popular spot for visitors and users.”

Cllr Wendy Bowkett, executive councillor for adult care and community wellbeing at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “The council has been investing in its day centres, with Lindum contracted to make the improvements at the Boundary Street HUB. We were very grateful that they agreed to carry out these additional works at no extra cost, adding extra value to this important project.”

Day centre assistant team leader Hannah Purdy added: “The Boundary Street HUB is creating purposeful opportunities for the people in the service and the wider community. The café is a wonderful addition to our centre, and we’re so excited for our service users to take on the responsibility of running it. It will provide meaningful employment and skill building opportunities by empowering and supporting them in a safe, nurturing workplace.

“The café will be open to the public and our neighbours soon, and will create a welcome space for everyone, fostering connections and support within the local area. We plan to involve and engage with the community in various activities and events.

“The café will offer nutritious food and drink options, encouraging ecofriendly practices and will promote wellbeing both nutritionally but also will have a focus on promoting physical and mental wellbeing.

“We are incredibly grateful to Lindum and their contractors. The team has been fantastic throughout the process, and it was lovely to be able to serve them as our first guests.”
