Volunteers from Lindum helped to showcase career opportunities in the building industry at the second annual Get into Construction event in Nottingham yesterday (April 3rd).

Hosted at Vision West Notts College and organised by Action for Construction, the national training group for Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire, the event brought together industry-leading employers to showcase the vast opportunities available to the next generation of construction professionals.

More than 120 pupils from schools across Nottinghamshire attended and turned their hands to a range of activities including door hanging, concrete cutting and bridge building

Lindum’s team offered an insight into site surveying, giving young people the chance to operate a GPS-activated theodolite, allowing them to measure angles and set out a mock construction site in the college’s car park.

Adele Doyle, general manager of AFC, organised the event with support from EMCCA, the college and sponsorship from CITB.

She said: “With hands-on activities and engaging discussions, the event provided an interactive experience that gave students a real insight into the world of construction The enthusiasm in the room was clear to see, as young people explored different trades, learned about career pathways, and connected with experts from across the industry.

“A huge thanks you to all the employers who attended and helped create such an inspiring experience for the students. Your time, expertise, and enthusiasm truly made the day special!”

Lindum’s activities were led by site engineer Tom Haire and social value manager Hayley Cowell.

Hayley said: “Lindum is committed to encouraging young people into construction and was delighted to support this event. By engaging with students directly, we hope to highlight the many and varied rewarding careers available in construction and the variety of skills needed in the industry.”

The Get into Construction event was created in 2024 as part of SCAPE’s Community Legacy Programme, building on the success of Lincoln Construction Week, which has been promoting construction as a future career for school children for nearly 20 years.

Lindum was one of the founding partners of Lincoln Construction Week and used this experience to help to establish a successful and inclusive event for young people in Nottinghamshire.
