Lindum staff teamed up with pupils and teachers from Leslie Manser Primary School in Lincoln and collected four bags full of rubbish during a one-hour litter pick in the local area.

Discarded sweet wrappers, crisp packets, cans and bottles, food packaging, plastic bags and cigarette butts were removed from streets and green spaces in Birchwood.

All the rubbish gathered was taken to Lindum’s PAS 402-certified Waste Recycling Centre, in Saxilby, where more than 99% of waste is diverted from landfill.

Before the tidy-up, Lindum hosted an interactive recycling and sustainability workshop for students and provided waste grabbers, bin bags, hi-vis vests, gloves and a skip.

Student Jacqueline, seven, said: “I loved the game where we had to choose which items were recyclable and non-recyclable – that’s why I had two goes.”

Evie, nine, said: “I liked it when we walked into the woods and picked up all the rubbish. I wish people wouldn’t litter. Rubbish can blow into the trees and oceans and hurt animals.”

Nathaniel, eight, said: “I enjoyed all the activities. I feel angry when I see litter in the street – please put it in the bin.”

Jessica, eight, said: “I wish people wouldn’t drop litter – it looks a mess and is bad for the environment.”

Heather Newborn, Lower Key Stage 2 Leader, said: “It’s been so nice to go out of the school into the community and pick litter. I think we should a make it a whole school thing.”

Lindum, an approved contractor on the SCAPE Regional Construction framework, organised the event as part of the public sector procurement authority’s Litter Pick for Volunteering Week (June 1 to 6).

Jade Nelson, Lindum Group’s Framework Administrator, said it was brilliant to see pupils, teachers and Lindum staff working together to make a visible difference in the local community.

She said: “The litter pick not only helped improve the environment around the school but also gave everyone an opportunity to think about the importance of recycling, sustainability and looking after the places where we live, learn and work.

“We are proud to support initiatives like this and to work alongside SCAPE during Volunteers’ Week to encourage positive community action.”

Nicole Hill, Social Impact Coordinator at SCAPE, said: “We are committed to creating positive social value through every project delivered via our frameworks, and initiatives like this litter pick are a great example of that in action.

“It is fantastic to see Lindum working alongside pupils, teachers and the wider school community to support this initiative in Lincoln.

“Activities like these demonstrate the power of collaboration and show how, by working together, we can create cleaner, greener places while inspiring future generations to take pride in their local communities.”
