Lindum has worked with subcontractor Rilmac Group Ltd to create a new Work at Height Training Area at the Lindum Business Park in North Hykeham.

The set up will provide employees with easier access to essential scaffold awareness and inspection training while helping to improve safety standards across the construction industry.

The new facility features two specially designed Scaffold Solution units containing 24 faults in total – 14 on one scaffold and 10 on the other – allowing trainees to gain hands-on experience identifying common scaffold defects and safety issues in a controlled environment.

The initiative has been introduced to support Lindum’s site teams in obtaining and renewing their Basic Scaffold Awareness and Inspection Training. As part of the company’s Essential Training programme, all Site Managers and Contracts Managers across the group will complete the course at the new facility.

Previously, employees were required to travel to Grimsby or Nottingham to undertake the training, which must be renewed every five years. Bringing the course in-house will make training more accessible, reduce travel time and ensure more staff can benefit from practical, high-quality instruction closer to home.

Training is likely to be delivered by Safety and Access Ltd, one of the UK’s leading scaffolding and access training providers, ensuring participants receive industry-recognised certification and expert guidance.

The investment reflects Lindum’s ongoing commitment to improving safety standards.

Lindum H&S Director Rob Wright said: “Falls from height remain one of the construction industry’s most significant risks, accounting for 50% of fatal construction accidents in 2023. Industry figures also suggest that around 60% of scaffolds inspected on site fail to meet required safety standards, highlighting the importance of regular training and inspection.

“The project also showcases a longstanding partnership between two Lincoln-based businesses. Lindum and Rilmac have worked together for more than 20 years, and Rilmac generously donated the materials and constructed the purpose-built faulty scaffolds free of charge.

“The collaboration demonstrates how local businesses can work together to support skills development, improve workplace safety and invest in the future of the construction industry.”

The Work at Height Training Area complements Lindum’s existing training facilities, which already provide practical instruction in areas including groundwork, traffic management and wet trade activities.

If successful, the scheme could be expanded to support new starters, trainees and apprentices, helping to raise competency levels across the business, improve safety awareness and make essential training more accessible for the next generation of construction professionals.
