Hands-on challenges, giant Jenga and a mini digger were among the attractions helping Lindum inspire the next generation of industry professionals at this year’s Lincolnshire Construction and Engineering Week.

Hundreds of schoolchildren visited Lindum’s stand at the Lincolnshire Showground between September 22 and 24, getting the chance to try practical activities and discover more about the skills and careers available.

Now in its 22nd year, the annual event gave primary and secondary school pupils the opportunity to experience construction and engineering through a programme of fun, interactive activities.

More than 50 companies from across Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and the Humber attended. Activities included bricklaying, carpentry, electrical and mechanical engineering, paving, operating diggers and welding (using virtual reality simulators).

At Lindum’s stand, pupils tackled a mini digger challenge, giant Jenga and a PPE race, putting their practical skills, coordination and teamwork to the test.

As a business with a long-standing commitment to developing young people, Lindum was pleased to support an event that gives pupils an early insight into the sector and the opportunities it can offer.

Lindum’s Apprentice Manager, John Levey, said: “We were delighted to give students a fun, hands-on introduction to construction and the huge variety of careers the industry offers.

“Events like this give young people a clearer picture of what construction is really about. It was good to have the opportunity to chat with students about the different roles within Lindum, from site-based roles, skilled trades and engineering to project management, design, surveying, marketing, law, HR and accountancy.

“There are opportunities to suit a wide range of interests and skills, and we hope the experience sparks an interest that could grow into a future career.”

Organised by Lincoln Group Training Association (LGTA) and Abbey Access Training, in partnership with local employers, the event brought industry and education together to help young people understand the career opportunities available locally.

Lindum was a support sponsor alongside Greater Lincolnshire Careers Hub and J McCann & Co Ltd.

Principal sponsors were the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB), Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and Humber Energy Board.

“Our Construction Workforce Outlook report forecasts that the construction industry needs an average of 41,200 extra workers across the UK per year to meet demand, making events like this more important than ever to showcase what is on offer and inspire the next generation.”

ARCO also supported the event by providing every child with a high-visibility vest to wear during their visit and take home afterwards.
