Lindum has completed construction of a new £2.7m state-of-the-art fire station in Howden, Yorkshire.

Built on the site of the former station, which had served the community for more than 60 years, the new facility provides modern operational, welfare and training facilities designed to support firefighters, enhance emergency response capabilities and create a welcoming space for the local community.

The project has transformed the site into a sustainable, future-ready fire station that meets the latest standards for firefighter safety, wellbeing, equality and dignity.

Delivered by Lindum’s York team, the project forms part of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service’s wider Capital Estates Programme and provides a modern base for the Service’s on-call firefighters serving Howden and the surrounding area.

It includes a new appliance bay, improved changing and welfare facilities, a multi-purpose room and community meeting spaces, alongside upgrades to the existing training tower.

The new station also incorporates flexible changing facilities to accommodate a dynamic workforce while maintaining dignity, privacy and compliance with the latest operational guidance. The first floor also includes gym facilities, wellbeing spaces and meeting areas that can be used by both fire service personnel and the local community.

The building includes roof-mounted solar photovoltaic panels and an air source heat pump, replacing the former station’s oil-fired heating system, enabling it to operate primarily through self-generated electricity and supporting Humberside Fire and Rescue Service’s net-zero ambitions.

The development presented a number of significant construction and engineering challenges. Working within a constrained site footprint, the project team successfully managed unforeseen ground contamination, the discovery of previously unidentified wells, utility diversions and the complex relocation of telecommunications infrastructure, all while maintaining uninterrupted mobile communications across the wider area.

Following a 28-month programme from concept through to completion, the new station provides a future-proofed facility that will serve Howden and the surrounding area for decades to come.

James Nellist, Managing Director of Lindum York, said: “We are pleased to have delivered this important project on behalf of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and the Joint Estates Service. The new Howden Fire Station demonstrates what can be achieved through true collaboration between the client, design team, stakeholders and our supply chain partners.

“Despite a number of significant challenges throughout construction, our team worked closely with all parties to ensure the project was delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards. The result is a modern, sustainable and highly functional facility that supports firefighter wellbeing, operational effectiveness and the long-term needs of the community.

“We would like to thank everyone involved in the project for their commitment and partnership throughout, and we are delighted to hand over a building that will serve the firefighters of Howden and the local community for many years to come.”

The scheme was delivered on a constrained operational site and presented a number of significant challenges throughout construction. During the works, the project team encountered unforeseen ground contamination, previously unidentified wells and burst water mains, all of which required careful management to maintain progress. The redevelopment also involved the relocation of telecommunications infrastructure serving the wider area, requiring close coordination with telecoms providers to ensure uninterrupted mobile coverage throughout the construction programme.

Despite these complexities, Lindum worked closely with Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, the Joint Estates Service, Sewell Advisory and the wider project team to develop practical solutions and keep the project on track. Through collaborative planning and proactive problem-solving, the team successfully delivered a larger, modern facility on a restricted site footprint, completing the project to programme and budget while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and operational continuity.
