Construction of a new three-storey building to house seafront visitor facilities in Cleethorpes has reached a significant milestone.

Lindum is delivering the Sea Road project for North East Lincolnshire Council, providing modern public amenities, changing facilities and lettable retail or hospitality space.

The project reached a key stage on Tuesday, August 4, as works to create the concrete foundations and floor slabs began. Pours will continue over the coming weeks before the next phase, when the building’s steel frame will start to take shape.

Steel supplied by ArcelorMittal Scunthorpe will be installed by Scunthorpe-based North Lincs Structures Ltd to form the framework of the building from mid September.

Cllr Oliver Freeston, leader of the Council, said: “I’m really pleased that, as part of the works, we’ve been able to support steel industry companies at Scunthorpe. We need to make sure that through our projects, we support local businesses where we can to help protect jobs.”

Lindum Co-chair Ed Chambers said: “As a local Lincolnshire company, it’s really important to us to support businesses in the area, both small and large, and this was a great opportunity to make sure that money from the project is driven to local supply chain.

“Demonstrating a strong commitment to the local economy, 56% of subcontractor spend to date has been with businesses based within 10 miles of the project.”

Erecting the steelwork as early as possible – before the wintering bird season – minimises potential visual disturbance to the wildlife, habitats and migrating birds that use the Cleethorpes coastline as a key route to continental Europe and beyond.

Designed to complement the character of the seafront, the building takes inspiration from Cleethorpes’ Art Deco heritage, with architectural references to nearby landmarks such as the Central Promenade retail kiosks and the former Electricity Board showroom on Isaac’s Hill.

Once complete, the first floor will also be accessible from Pier Gardens, reinstating the historic link between the gardens and Cleethorpes Pier.
