Construction company Lindum has set up its own teaching site and opened its own training centre as part of a commitment to the ongoing development of its workforce.
The facilities have been set up on the Lindum Business Park in Station Road, North Hykeham, and are primarily used to support the progress of apprentices and technical trainees.
The teaching site is located on previously disused land next to the Lindum offices while the Training Centre building used to be home to electrical contractors Brook & Mayo.
The training centre can also be hired by other businesses or community groups which need space to deliver courses or events. It has a large training room, a smaller meeting room and a workshop – or “˜dirty classroom’ – that can be used to deliver practical training.
Lindum Training Manager Sara Hobson said: “The new site and centre are great additions to our training facilities. The site is mainly used by our Groundwork apprentices, who are given intensive training before they head off onto live construction sites.
“We are also able to bring other trainees, such as bricklaying apprentices, onto the land so they can receive one-to-one tuition or focus on particular techniques or practical methods without the pressure of being on a live site. This also supports the tuition they receive at college.
“The training centre allows us to deliver courses in a traditional “˜classroom’ way but we can also use the workshop to demonstrate practical skills without interrupting the progress of busy construction sites.
“We can gather all our apprentices in one place and use our experienced site staff to coach them and share their knowledge and skills in a practical environment.
“In addition to this, we have also delivered public courses in heritage skills such as stone masonry and carpentry.”
Lindum has redecorated the unit and used its joinery apprentices to install a new wall in the building using recycled timber from the old store room.
New signage has been fitted and new electrics have been installed, along with fresh paint and new carpets. It is also fully equipped with IT systems including wi-fi, screens and a projector.
