Recruitment adviser Sophie Burton swapped CVs for PPE in an effort to find out more about working on a building site.
Sophie, who is part of Lindum’s HR team, was keen to gain an insight into life on the front line of construction.
She hoped that working alongside Lindum’s team of ground workers and bricklayers would assist the company’s recruitment decisions.
And after spending a shift at the city’s Sincil Street construction site, Sophie said she had gained an incredible insight into the skills and attitude that are needed to be successful in the industry.
“It was a real eye opener,” said Sophie, who previously worked in HR for an international florist.
“I knew the site teams worked hard, but seeing it with my own eyes really drove it home. It’s clear that, as well as the technical skills, those on site need stamina, a strong work ethic and a good attitude. They are working on a busy environment and within the constraints of strict health and safety regulations.
“My role is to recruit construction people for roles across the Lindum Group and this has given me a fresh perspective on what we need. It has also given me the chance to learn some of the technical terms, so I can better appreciate what they do.”
Sophie spent time shadowing Groundworks supervisor Martin Brennan and his son, groundworker Josh Brennan. She also worked with bricklayer John Levey, and said watching him work was “like watching a pastry chef at work”.
“They are so quick and accurate. The skills they have are amazing to watch.”
